Pass the Mic

Pass The Mic spotlights the stories and experiences of New Zealanders from migrant and former refugee backgrounds. The first series from 2022 is a community-led collaboration in partnership with Belong Aotearoa, Sport Waitākere and Storyo, hosted by Elina Ashimbayeva. The second series from 2025 focuses on the employment experience of lived experts and was made with funding from the J R McKenzie Trust.

Pass The Mic S2 Episode 8: Liliana

Liliana arrived from Colombia with great credentials and experience, but like many migrants she faced challenges. She had to take low-paid jobs and return to study just to get by. And after many attempts, Liliana is now in a role where she feels welcome, included, and valued as a migrant. Through resilience and community, she kept moving forward. In this episode, she shares her journey from underemployment to finding a place where she truly belongs.

Nina has been recognised by the Asian New Zealand Foundation and YWCA as a young person to watch, and in this episode, Nina shares her work with the “Mind The Gap'' campaign and ethnic pay gap reporting.
